Between Wines and History
The Beira Interior region is the highest wine region in the country, surrounded by the Estrela, Marofa and Malcata mountain ranges, meaning that we find vineyards at an altitude of about 700 metres. Its high quality wines portray the legacy left by our ancestors from Roman times, who also devoted so much of their time to the cultivation and production of wine. Later, in the Middle Ages, in the 12th century, the Cistercian Order promoted the dissemination and implementation of new wine production techniques. Unique, high quality wines are produced here, with high levels of complexity, resulting from the harsh climate and granite or schist soils.
