Enveloped in a medieval atmosphere, Castelo Mendo embraces a historical diversity that goes back to its first occupation, in the Bronze Age. Battles are relived here and legends are known, but it is in the kindness of Vilar Formoso that we find inspiration. We find stories in this village that are transported through time, about an eventual impossible love between Mendo and Menda two stone figures, facing each other in this village. A story or maybe a legend of love to rival Romeo and Juliet. It is better to listen to those who know.

Fronteira da Paz Museum
Memorial to the Refugees and to the Consul Aristides de Sousa Mendes, who issued thousands of visas in 1940, making it possible for thousands of Jews to escape the Nazi regime. It hides numerous testimonies of refugees who describe Vilar Formoso as a friendly place where they were welcomed with huge pots of soup, bread and accommodation. Vilar Formoso was the gateway to Portugal, renowned for its hospitality.
