The kosher inheritance of the Sephardic Jews

The kosher inheritance of the Sephardic Jews

0€ per person

In Belmonte, the birthplace of an important Jewish community, you can feel the traditions, prayers and customs of a community that remains alive in the interior of Beira.

Belmonte is perhaps the Portuguese area where the Jewish presence is stronger. It is a unique case on the Iberian peninsula, since the Hebrew culture and tradition has been in place since the beginning of the 16th century and continues to today. Despite persecution, they have maintained the basic customs of Judaism to the present day, living in a closed community in which women have been in charge of preserving and maintaining the tradition for 500 years.

Guided Tour with a Jew who is a member of the local community
To create an authentic experience, this guided visit to the historical village of Belmonte will be a moment of sharing and reflection on the traditions, customs and stories of the secret Jews of Portugal, through the eyes of a member of the community. Visit to the heritage and history of a community that has kept its traditions and worship alive, led by a guide of Jewish origin for the visits to the synagogue and museums.
2
Visit to the Jewish Museum
The Jewish Museum of Belmonte opened in 2005. It portrays the long history of the Jewish community in the region, which resisted long years and centuries of historical persecution. Here you can discover more than one hundred religious, daily and professional items used by Jewish families, especially those of Beira Interior and Trás-os-Montes. We get to know the edicts, the Torah and Menorah and chants during certain moments of Jewish rituals.
3
Lunch
After the visit to the Jewish community and heritage, the experience is prolonged at lunch with a kosher menu. There is nothing better than to taste a meal with elements that evoke rituals that remain alive in the Jewish communities.
